Amsterdam Tram System

The rules and explanations below regarding Amsterdam's Tram, Bus & Metro services are based on our understanding and are in no way legal or honored by the Tram, bus or metro system, conductors, or ticket agencies. This information is based on tourist guide to Public transport and interviews with representatives at the Tram office at Central Station in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is broken into zones. Each trip you take is priced based on the number of zones that you travel. One zone for an adult is €1,60. Each additional zone will cost you €.80. This charge is the same even for seniors and children if you buy your ticket on the tram.

Seniors & Children, along with pets (animals that you cannot hold in you lap without taking up 2 seats) are only .80. The only way that you can take advantage of the lower prices is if you have a pre-purchased tram ticket which comes in a strip. You can purchase a Strip Card from the tram office, most grocery stores or convenience stores. The reduced price Strip cards are PINK. You can also get a full price adult card which is blue. It will save you money & time and the worry of whether or not the conductor will have change or not. The normal fair is €1.60 for one zone. If you buy a €5.90 strip card get 7 1/2 single zone trips which means you only pay € 1.28 for one zone. You can also get the €18.30 strip card which gives you 21 1/2 single zone trips making the price for one zone only €1.18.

Amsterdam is separated into sections called zones for the tram & bus services. Starting from the inside zone 5700 is the first zone or one zone. One zone will cost you 1.60 or 2 strips on a standard strip card. For every zone away from the center zone you would add one more strip on your strip card. For example from 5700 to 5714, 5713 and so on would be an additional €0.80. Please ask the tram driver if you have any questions. Payment gets a little tricky outside one zone and if you do not pay and get caught you will be forced to pay a fine of 60.00 at the time that you are caught. There is no mail in service of fines in The Netherlands that I know of.
